Every child we meet must be safe with us
Volunteers, interns, team members, visitors: anyone working with children alongside Midezon-Togo commits to this policy. It sets out what we expect from everyone, how we check, and how to raise a concern.
✓ Version 1 — October 2026, to be adopted by the board
Our commitment
The child’s interest comes first: before a mission’s schedule, before a photo, before a volunteer’s comfort. This principle guides our choices.
- We no longer offer placements in orphanages or in any institution that houses children: short volunteer stays create repeated attachments that are then broken.
- Activities with children (tutoring, games and workshops) take place at school or at the Midezon House, always with the association’s team.
- Everyone who travels with us accepts this policy when registering and shows a criminal record certificate before departure.
- No child’s profile is published without the board’s confirmation and the written consent of the child’s parents.
- Every concern is listened to, taken seriously and handled discreetly.
The code of conduct
Six simple rules that apply throughout the mission, in Togo and after you return home.
Never alone with a child
Always within sight of another adult from the team, in an open place. No journeys alone with a child, no visits to a child’s home without the team.
No published photo of an identifiable child
No photo or video of a recognisable child online or on social media without the written consent of the parents, obtained by the association. Never a name, school or place linked to an image.
No private contact
No exchanging numbers, no private messages, no “friends” or follows on social media with a child — during the mission or afterwards.
No money, no personal gifts
No money and no personal gifts to a child or their family. To help, go through the association: a donation benefits all the children without creating expectations or inequality.
No violence, no punishment
No physical or verbal violence, no punishment, no humiliation, whatever the situation. If something is difficult, call on the team.
Appropriate dress and language
Clothing suited to the place and local customs, respectful language, no remarks or gestures of a sexual nature, no alcohol or smoking in front of children.
Criminal record checks
Before any departure, we check that no conviction bars the person from working with children.
- 1
Request your criminal record certificate
In France: the “bulletin n° 3”, issued less than 3 months ago (free online request). If you live in another country: the equivalent document issued there — in Germany, for example, the “erweitertes Führungszeugnis”.
- 2
Show it to the safeguarding lead before departure
You show the document to the lead appointed by the board, in person or by video call. Without it, your departure is not confirmed.
- 3
No copy is kept
The association keeps neither the document nor a copy. Only the date of the check is recorded in your file, with the name of the person who carried it out.
Preparing before departure
- When registering: reading this policy and committing to it (a required box on the form).
- Before departure: a conversation with the team that goes through the code of conduct and answers your questions, and the criminal record check.
- On arrival: a welcome session with the Togolese team covering house rules, local customs and who to tell if you have a concern.
- During the mission: activities with children are prepared and supervised by the association’s team.
Raising a concern
Did a behaviour make you uncomfortable, did a child confide in you, was a rule broken? Speak up, even if you are not sure. One report too many is better than silence.
- 1
Write to us
Use the contact form and choose the subject “Raise a concern (child protection)”. In Togo, you can also speak directly to the Togo lead.
- 2
The lead takes over
Your message is read by the lead appointed by the board and handled discreetly. The child’s interest guides every decision.
- 3
You are protected
No one who reports in good faith will be blamed or face any consequence for doing so.
If a child is in immediate danger, alert the emergency services first: in Togo, the police or gendarmerie; in France, 17 (police) or 119 (child protection helpline).
Safeguarding leads
France lead
The lead appointed by the board. They receive the concerns sent through the contact form and check criminal record certificates before departure.
Togo lead
The lead appointed by the board within the Sanguera team, introduced to every volunteer on arrival.
The leads are appointed by the association’s board when it adopts this policy.
Our framework
This policy is based on the Keeping Children Safe International Child Safeguarding Standards: a written policy, trained people, procedures everyone knows, and accountability to children and families.
Version 1 — October 2026, to be adopted by the board.
Child protection: frequently asked questions
Why do you no longer offer orphanage placements?
Because short volunteer stays in an institution that houses children expose them to repeated attachments that are then broken. International guidance points the same way: support children within their families and at school. Our education missions therefore take place at school and at the Midezon House.
Is a criminal record certificate compulsory?
Yes, for everyone who goes on a mission or work camp with the association. It is shown to the lead before departure; no copy is kept, only the date of the check is recorded.
Can I take photos during my mission?
Yes — landscapes, the building site, life at the house. For children: no photo of a recognisable child may be published without the written consent of the parents, obtained by the association. If in doubt, ask the team.
Can I keep in touch with a child after my stay?
Not directly: no phone number, no private messages, no social media. You can ask the association for news, and support the children through a donation or a sponsorship.
Who reads my report?
The lead appointed by the board. Your message is handled discreetly and only the people who need to act are informed.
A concern or a question?
Write to us: your message will be read by the child protection lead.
